Robot entrepreneur swaps Silicon Valley with Odense to join StartUp Hub

Denmark has become an attractive destination for entrepreneurs developing new robotics technology. And Carl Chatfield from the startup company Fishi Robotics is the perfect example. He moved his company from Silicon Valley to Denmark because the conditions for starting your own company using your own funds – so-called bootstrapping – are far better in Denmark than in the U.S.

Fishi Robotics is one of five new robot and drone entrepreneurs that have been selected for a place in Odense Robotics StartUp Hub at Technological Institute, where they are to accelerate their growth over the next 12 months.

“The robotics environment in Odense offers a great mix of technical know-how, market access and entrepreneurial environment. That’s why I chose to move from Silicon Valley and establish my company here in Odense. I expect to get started quickly here because there are good conditions for establishing a company. Also, I’m convinced that I can develop Fishi Robotics with bootstrapping much better here than in California,” says Carl Chatfield, Founder of Fishi Robotics.

Upskilling project well underway

The first cluster companies in Odense Robotics have successfully participated and completed an upskilling course as part of the programme “Vækstrettet Kompetenceudvikling”. The project seeks to create training tailored to ensure employees have the necessary skills to fuel company growth. Automation Lab is one of the first companies to complete the upskilling course and plans to participate in more.

Vækstrettet Kompetenceudvikling was launched in May earlier this year as the first programme to support robot and automation companies on Funen in upskilling employees at all levels – new and existing. Companies can get a minimum of 50% funding for employee training activities that match their needs.

Automation Lab was getting ready to improve their skills within the software Iconics Scada as part of their growth strategy, but they were lacking employees with the right qualifications and experience required to manage the software. An Odense Robotics representative met with Automation Lab and explained the benefits the company would get by upskilling their employees as part of the project. The company immediately saw the benefits.

“The programme was heaven-sent. It was simply incredible that we could get the financial support to equip our employees with the qualifications needed to manage the system. Our aim is to become experts within Iconics Scada, which is why we need a good group of employees proficient in it. The programme kick-started this and we are eager to send our employees to more courses to ensure they get the exact qualifications they need to create growth,” says Claus Walther Jensen, Director at Automation Lab.
Apprenticeships lead to future automation technicians

Hiring apprentices and showcasing career options pays off. And with a new study programme in Odense for automation technicians, there are many opportunities now to train and hire future talent. SANOVO TECHNOLOGY GROUP strongly believes that apprenticeships are a valuable part of their future workforce – and now the company is reaping the benefits.

SANOVO TECHNOLOGY GROUP takes on several automation technician apprentices at a time and hires them after they graduate. And a new study programme for automation technicians established at SDE College a year ago has opened new doors for robot and automation companies.

Yet the company recognises that students need to get better information as many find it confusing to figure out which companies hire apprentices. Indeed, this isn’t made easier by the fact that some companies don’t have a HR department or publicly list their apprenticeship opportunities.

That’s why SANOVO TECHNOLOGY GROUP in cooperation with SDE College held an event to provide students with information about the many apprenticeship and career opportunities on Funen. Gibotech, Roll-o-matic, Cabinplant and BCM Transtech also took part. The companies gave presentations and had the chance to meet the students face to face.
New companies in the cluster
Meet Carl Chatfield, Founder of Fishi Robotics
The Australian moved from Silicon Valley to Odense to start up his robot business in Odense Robotics StartUp Hub. Watch the video of him jumping in the water on a cold winter morning in Denmark to test his very own underwater robot – a tool that will make it possible to survey the condition of ships and windmills at sea. He loves scuba-diving and everything to do with the water. He says: “When you get to turn your hobby into your profession, that’s the dream right?”
